Hurricane Preparation

There are many things that you can do to prepare your pool for a hurricane or tropical storm:

The most important thing to to is to secure all loose objects in your lawn and around your pool.  This is both for the safety of your home and your pool.  These items can be   This includes your pool furniture, a pool cover if you have one (if i is not a safety cover), the skimmer lid, and any cleaning supplies around the pool area or equipment.  If you cannot move and secure the patio furniture, you can throw it in the pool.  The furniture will not blow away if it is underwater,  but you should remove it as soon as the storm passes.  If you have to put the furniture into the pool, be careful because heavy furniture can chip concrete pools, scratch fiberglass pools, or puncture vinyl pools.

You should also superchlorinate the water.  If you have a saltwater chloriator or any other alternative sanitizer, there should be a boost or superchlorinate setting for the equpment.  There is going to be lots of rain, and lots of debris flying into the pool.  This will signficantly lower the total chlorine levels and allow algae to grow.  Raising the chlorine levels beforehand will help prevent problems after the storm passes.

You should turn the power off to the equipment.  There will be lots of wind and rain, and will be localized flooding.  Turning off the power to the equipment reduces the chances for equipment damage.

After the storm:

If the power is out, and possibly will be out for any extended period of time, it is recommended to not swim in the pool - that may be the only source of clean water available to use for flushing toilets or bathing or as neeeded.

Do not drain the pool.  The groundwater will most likely be much higher than usual, and if the pool is empties, it can 'pop' - it will actually float on top of the water, separating from its foundations and causing structural damage.

For pools that have not been circulating for a while, and need professional cleaning / servicing, feel free to contact us and we will be happy to give you a quotation.  We will provide the necessary cleaning or acid washing and restarting based on how poor the water quality is.

Turn the power on to the equipment and ensure that everything is in working order.  If there are parts that have been damaged from the storm, contact us and we will be happy to assist you with any necessary repairs.  Reset the timer to the proper time.

Remove all debris anc clean the pool.  Once all of the debris from the storm is removed from the pool, the water will return to its normal levels of chemistry.  Let the pump run continually for a day or two until the water reaches normal clarity. You should now be able to enjoy your pool!

If you would like any assistance with any hurricane related issues, or any pool problems or services in general, feel free to contact us at any time, and we wil be happy to assist you.
